For nerds
You don't need to know anything about photography. Below we explain in plain language how lenses differ, what they're for and how they affect the cost of a job. Not sure what to pick? Get in touch and we'll advise.
Focal length (mm)
Tells you how wide a lens “sees”. A small number (14–24 mm) fits a lot in the frame, like a whole room. A big number (85–400 mm) brings things closer, like binoculars.
Aperture (f/1.4, f/2.8…)
The smaller the number after “f/”, the more light gets in. Better photos in dark venues and a more blurred background behind the person.
Prime or zoom?
A prime (e.g. 85 mm) has a single focal length but is brighter and sharper. A zoom (e.g. 24-70 mm) lets you get closer without moving or changing lenses.
Angle of view is how wide a “slice of the world” a lens captures. The red cone next to each lens shows it at a glance: the wider it is, the more fits in the frame. For zooms, the light cone is the widest setting and the dark one the narrowest.
